Why Vienna for Medical Treatment?

Vienna is one of Europe's leading destinations for medical care. The city is home to the Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Stadt Wien (AKH), one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, as well as numerous specialized clinics and private medical facilities. The AKH alone houses over 2,000 beds and provides world-class treatment across virtually every medical specialty, from oncology and cardiology to orthopedics, neurology, and transplant medicine. Patients travel to Vienna from across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond for treatment that may not be available or accessible in their home countries.

Medical travel, however, presents unique accommodation challenges that standard hotels are poorly equipped to handle. Treatment schedules often span days, weeks, or even months. Patients may need to follow strict dietary regimens that require home cooking. Recovery periods demand quiet, comfortable surroundings rather than the anonymous environment of a hotel room. Accompanying family members need a place to rest, prepare meals, and manage the emotional stress of supporting a loved one through treatment. Old Vienna Apartments provides all of this at a fraction of hotel costs.

Getting to AKH from Our Apartment

The AKH university hospital campus is located in the 9th district at Wahringer Gurtel 18-20. From Old Vienna Apartments at Herminengasse 12, reaching AKH is straightforward and takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes by public transport.

By tram: Walk one minute to Schottenring, then take tram line 43 or 44 from nearby Schottentor (one U2 stop or a 10-minute walk along the Ringstrasse) directly to the AKH campus. The tram ride takes about 12 minutes. Alternatively, take the U2 from Schottenring toward Seestadt, exit at Schottentor, and catch the tram there.

By metro and walking: Take the U2 from Schottenring to Schottentor, then transfer to tram 43 or 44. The entire journey from door to hospital entrance takes about 20 minutes, including waiting time.

By taxi: A taxi from Herminengasse to AKH costs approximately 10 to 15 euros and takes about 10 minutes, depending on traffic. For patients who are feeling unwell or have mobility limitations following treatment, a taxi provides a comfortable, direct option.

For patients visiting other Vienna hospitals, our central location and proximity to Schottenring Metro (U2 and U4) provides excellent connections. The Rudolfstiftung hospital (Juchgasse) is reachable via the U4 and a short tram ride. The Hanusch-Krankenhaus is accessible via the U2 line. Private clinics such as the Wiener Privatklinik and Rudolfinerhaus are also within easy reach by public transport or taxi.

Why an Apartment Is Better Than a Hotel for Medical Stays

Medical travelers have fundamentally different needs from tourists. A hotel room, with its single bed, mini fridge, and lack of cooking facilities, is a poor environment for someone undergoing treatment or recovering from a procedure. Here is why our apartments serve medical travelers so much better.

Kitchen for special diets: Many medical treatments require specific dietary modifications. Chemotherapy patients may need bland, easily digestible foods. Post-surgical patients might require high-protein meals. Patients with kidney conditions may need to control sodium and potassium intake precisely. A fully equipped kitchen gives you complete control over what you eat, when you eat, and how your food is prepared. You are not dependent on restaurant menus that may not cater to medical dietary needs.

Space for recovery: Our apartments range from 16 to 60 square meters, providing genuine living space rather than a cramped hotel room. After a day of medical appointments, you need room to move, a comfortable sofa to rest on, and a separate sleeping area where you can get proper rest. The larger Comfort and Superior apartments provide separate bedrooms, which is especially important when a patient needs undisturbed sleep while a family member stays up or arrives back later.

Privacy and dignity: Medical situations are inherently personal. In a hotel, you pass through a public lobby, ride shared elevators with strangers, and may hear neighboring guests through thin walls. Our self check-in system means you go directly from the street to your private apartment. The building is quiet, the walls are solid (built in 1872), and your medical situation remains entirely private.

Accommodation for companions: Patients rarely travel alone for medical treatment. A spouse, parent, adult child, or friend typically accompanies them. Our apartments accommodate up to six guests in the Superior unit, allowing the patient and their support network to stay together under one roof rather than booking separate hotel rooms. This is both more affordable and emotionally supportive during a difficult time.

Features for Medical Travelers

Nearby Pharmacies and Essential Services

The Leopoldstadt district has several pharmacies within walking distance of Herminengasse 12. Austrian pharmacies (Apotheken) are well-stocked and staffed by trained pharmacists who can fill prescriptions from Austrian doctors, advise on over-the-counter medications, and provide basic medical supplies such as bandages, thermometers, and wound care products. If you need a pharmacy outside regular hours, Vienna operates a rotating night pharmacy system, and the address of the nearest open pharmacy is always posted on the door of every closed pharmacy.

For medical supplies that pharmacies do not carry, medical supply stores (Sanitatshauser) are available in the surrounding area. These stores sell mobility aids, compression garments, specialized pillows, and other recovery equipment that you might need during your stay.

If you need to see a general practitioner for non-emergency issues during your stay, the 2nd district has numerous Allgemeinmediziner (general practitioners) who accept walk-in patients or offer same-day appointments. Many speak English, and your hotel or apartment host can recommend one near your location.

Practical Tips for Medical Travelers to Vienna

Bring your medical records: Carry printed copies of your medical records, imaging results, and referral letters. While many hospitals accept digital records, having paper copies ensures no delays due to technical compatibility issues.

Confirm insurance coverage: If you are coming from within the EU, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides basic coverage at public hospitals like AKH. For non-EU patients or those seeking treatment at private clinics, confirm your insurance coverage or obtain travel medical insurance before arriving.

Stock your kitchen before treatment: If you know you will feel unwell after a procedure, shop for groceries beforehand. Prepare simple, nourishing soups, broths, or easy meals that you can reheat when your energy is low. Our refrigerator and microwave make this straightforward.

Plan your transport on treatment days: On days when you have procedures or feel unwell, budget for a taxi rather than public transport. The cost is modest (10 to 15 euros to AKH), and the comfort is worth it when you are not feeling your best.

Use the quiet days well: Between appointments, Vienna offers gentle, restorative activities. The Augarten park (15 minutes walk) provides peaceful green space for slow walks. The Danube Canal promenade (5 minutes walk) offers fresh air and waterside calm. On good days, the city's museums and cafes provide welcome distraction and cultural enrichment.

Our Recommendation for Medical Travelers

For a patient traveling alone, the Duett apartment (from 45 euros per night, 16 to 25 square meters) provides a comfortable, affordable base. For a patient with one companion, the Comfort apartment (60 euros per night, 30 square meters with a separate bedroom and full kitchen) is our most recommended option. The separate bedroom allows the patient to rest undisturbed, while the full kitchen enables preparation of medical diet meals. For patients traveling with family, the Superior apartment (90 euros per night, 60 square meters, two bedrooms) provides home-like space for the entire support team.
