About AKH Vienna (Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Stadt Wien)

The AKH Vienna, officially the Allgemeines Krankenhaus der Stadt Wien, is Austria's largest hospital and one of the most important medical centers in Central Europe. Located at Wahringer Gurtel 18-20 in Vienna's 9th district (Alsergrund), the hospital complex covers an enormous area and houses over 2,000 beds across dozens of specialized clinical departments. The current building, completed in 1994, replaced the historic hospital that had stood on the same site since the late 18th century under Emperor Joseph II.

The AKH serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Medical University of Vienna (Medizinische Universitat Wien), which is itself one of the oldest and most respected medical schools in the world, tracing its origins back to 1365. Together, the AKH and MedUni Wien form an integrated academic medical center where clinical care, teaching, and cutting-edge research are deeply intertwined. The campus draws not only patients from across Austria and beyond, but also medical students, researchers, visiting physicians, and specialists attending conferences and training programs.

The hospital offers highly specialized treatments in areas including oncology, cardiology, transplant medicine, neurosurgery, and rare diseases. Patients frequently travel to Vienna specifically for treatment at the AKH, and many need accommodation nearby for extended outpatient treatment periods, pre-operative stays, or post-operative recovery. Family members accompanying patients also require comfortable, affordable places to stay during what can be stressful times.

Why Stay at Old Vienna Apartments While Visiting AKH?

When you or a family member has medical appointments or treatment at the AKH, the last thing you want to worry about is uncomfortable or overpriced accommodation. Old Vienna Apartments provides a genuine home away from home where you can cook your own meals, rest comfortably, and maintain a sense of normalcy during a difficult period.

Our apartments feature fully equipped kitchens, which is particularly valuable for patients who may need to follow specific dietary requirements. The ability to prepare your own food rather than relying on hospital canteens or expensive restaurants can make a significant difference both financially and in terms of well-being. Each apartment has comfortable beds, modern bathrooms, and a peaceful environment for rest and recovery.

For medical professionals and researchers at MedUni Wien, our apartments offer a practical and affordable base. Visiting doctors, PhD students, and conference attendees benefit from the workspace, reliable WiFi, and the quiet residential setting. Our flexible booking from 3 days to 6 months accommodates everything from a brief conference visit to a full research fellowship.

The Leopoldstadt district where our apartments are located is well-connected to the AKH by public transport, with the journey taking about 20 minutes. The neighborhood itself offers a peaceful atmosphere with parks, shops, and all daily amenities within walking distance. Compared to hotels in the 9th district near the AKH, which can charge 100 euros or more per night, our rates starting at 45 euros per night represent substantial savings, especially for stays of a week or longer.

Getting from Old Vienna Apartments to AKH Hospital

By Tram via Schottentor – Most Convenient Route

Walk one minute from the apartment to Schottenring station. Take the U2 one stop to Schottentor (2 minutes). Exit the station and transfer to tram line 43 or 44 at the Schottentor surface stop. Both trams run along Wahringer Strasse directly to the AKH, with the stop "AKH/Allgemeines Krankenhaus" located right at the hospital entrance. The tram ride takes about 10 to 12 minutes. Total journey time: approximately 20 minutes.

Alternative: Tram 5 from Praterstern

You can take the U2 from Schottenring to Praterstern (or walk 20 minutes to Praterstern) and catch tram 5, which goes to the Lazarettgasse stop near the AKH. This route takes slightly longer but can be useful depending on your starting point within the hospital complex.

By Taxi

A taxi from Herminengasse 12 to the AKH takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 12 to 18 euros. This can be a good option for early morning appointments or when you are not feeling well enough for public transport. Taxi apps like Bolt and FreeNow work well in Vienna.

Nearby Restaurants and Cafes

Our neighborhood in Leopoldstadt offers diverse dining options suitable for all dietary needs and budgets:

Near the AKH itself, you will find the hospital's own cafeteria, a few cafes along Wahringer Strasse, and the popular university dining area around Alser Strasse.
