About the Augarten

The Augarten is the oldest Baroque park in Vienna, first opened to the public by Emperor Joseph II in 1775 with the inscription above its gate: "A place of amusement dedicated to all people by their friend." Covering 52.2 hectares in the heart of Leopoldstadt, it is one of the largest green spaces in inner Vienna and one of the least visited by tourists - making it a genuine local treasure rather than a crowded attraction.

The park's layout follows the classic Baroque pattern of long tree-lined avenues radiating from central axes, interspersed with open meadows, flower beds, and secluded benches. The oldest trees date back over 200 years, creating a canopy that is particularly beautiful in spring when the chestnut trees bloom and in autumn when the leaves turn gold. In summer, the meadows fill with picnicking families, sunbathers, and groups playing football or frisbee. In winter, the frost-covered avenues have a stark, quiet beauty.

The park's most striking features are the two massive Flak towers (Flakturme) - imposing concrete anti-aircraft fortifications built by the Nazis in 1944. These towers are among the most visible remnants of World War II in Vienna, standing about 55 meters tall with walls up to 3.5 meters thick. They were deemed too costly and dangerous to demolish after the war and have remained ever since, now partly overgrown with vegetation. They are a sobering contrast to the Baroque elegance of the park and serve as an unintentional war memorial.

The Augarten Porzellanmanufaktur (porcelain factory), established in 1718, is the second-oldest porcelain manufacturer in Europe after Meissen. Its factory and showroom are located within the park grounds, where you can visit the museum, watch artisans hand-painting porcelain, and purchase pieces directly. The factory has produced tableware for Habsburg emperors and continues to create luxury porcelain using centuries-old techniques.

The MuTh concert hall, also in the park, is home to the Vienna Boys' Choir (Wiener Sangerknaben), who have rehearsed and performed in the Augarten since 1948. The MuTh hosts regular public concerts - hearing the world-famous choir in this intimate setting is a special experience that many tourists never discover.

Why Stay Next to the Augarten?

Having a major park 500 meters from your apartment fundamentally changes the quality of a city stay. Morning jogs through the Baroque avenues, afternoon picnics on the meadow, evening walks under the chestnut canopy - these are daily luxuries, not scheduled excursions. For travelers staying a week or more, the Augarten becomes your garden, your gym, and your decompression space all in one.

For guests with dogs, the Augarten is ideal. Vienna requires dogs to be leashed in most public spaces, but the park's wide paths and open meadows give pets room to stretch their legs. Our apartments are pet-friendly at no extra charge, and the Augarten is the closest major green space to Herminengasse 12.

Families with children will appreciate the park's playground areas and the sheer space for kids to run around safely. The Augarten also hosts seasonal events including outdoor film screenings in summer and a small Christmas market. The surrounding streets of Leopoldstadt - Taborstrasse, Obere Augartengasse, and Castellezgasse - have a relaxed residential character with independent shops, small restaurants, and bakeries that feel miles away from the tourist center.

How to Get to the Augarten from Our Apartment

Walking (6 minutes, 500 meters)

Exit the apartment building on Herminengasse and walk north. Continue along Herminengasse, crossing Taborstrasse. Turn left onto Obere Augartenstrasse and the park entrance gate appears within minutes. The main entrance on Obere Augartenstrasse features the original Baroque portal with Joseph II's dedication inscription. You can also enter via the Wasnergasse gate, which is equally close.

Exploring Further

The Augarten connects to the wider Leopoldstadt neighborhood. From the park's eastern side, you can walk to the Karmelitermarkt (a charming local farmer's market, about 10 minutes), and from the southern edge, you are close to the Danube Canal's cycle paths and street art scene.
