Apartment Near Vienna's Donauinsel (Danube Island)

Beaches, barbecues, cycling, and Europe's biggest open-air music festival - all accessible via the U2 from Schottenring in about 15 minutes.

The Donauinsel: Vienna's Urban Playground

The Donauinsel (Danube Island) is a 21.1-kilometer-long artificial island stretching between the Danube River and the New Danube (Neue Donau), created between 1972 and 1988 as part of Vienna's flood protection system. What began as an engineering project has become one of Vienna's most beloved recreation areas - a car-free paradise of beaches, cycling paths, barbecue areas, water sports facilities, and nature reserves that attracts millions of visitors each year.

The island varies in width from 70 to 210 meters and is divided informally into sections. The central area near the Donauinsel U-Bahn station is the busiest, with beach bars (Strandbar Herrmann, Sunken City, Copa Cagrana on the adjacent bank), restaurants, and water sports rental shops. The Neue Donau side offers calm, clean water for swimming - the water quality is regularly tested and consistently rated excellent. The main Danube side is faster-flowing and used primarily by commercial shipping, though experienced open-water swimmers use certain sections.

Moving north and south from the central hub, the island becomes progressively wilder and more natural. The northern sections feature meadows, bird nesting areas, and quiet stretches of gravel beach that feel surprisingly remote for a major European capital. The southern end connects to the Lobau, a UNESCO-designated biosphere reserve that forms part of the Donau-Auen National Park - one of the last remaining major floodplain landscapes in Central Europe.

Why Stay Near the Donauinsel?

The Donauinsel transforms with the seasons. In summer (June through September), it becomes Vienna's primary outdoor destination. Locals flock here on hot days to swim in the Neue Donau, sunbathe on the grass banks, jog or cycle the full 21-kilometer path, or enjoy grilled food at the designated barbecue areas (free to use, with fire rings provided). The beach bars along the central section create a vacation atmosphere right within the city, serving cocktails and snacks with views across the water.

The island is also home to the Donauinselfest, Europe's largest open-air music festival, held annually over three days in late June. With over 3 million visitors and free admission, the festival features hundreds of performers across multiple stages covering genres from rock and pop to electronic, jazz, and traditional Austrian folk music. Staying at Old Vienna Apartments during the Donauinselfest is ideal - you are close enough to attend easily via the U2 but far enough from the island to escape the noise when you want to sleep.

For fitness enthusiasts, the Donauinsel offers some of Vienna's best running and cycling routes. The paved path along the island is flat, car-free, and scenic, stretching 21 kilometers with distance markers. The Neue Donau is popular for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sailing, with rental facilities near the Donauinsel station. In winter, the path is still used by runners and cyclists, and on rare occasions when the Neue Donau freezes solid, locals come out for ice skating (though this is unofficial and at your own risk).

Walking and Transit Directions

By U-Bahn (approximately 15 minutes total): Walk 1 minute to Schottenring station. Take the U2 line direction Seestadt. Ride to Donauinsel station (about 8 minutes, passing through Taborstrasse and Praterstern stations). Exit at Donauinsel - the station is built directly on the island, so you step out onto the Donauinsel itself. From the station exit, stairs and ramps lead down to the waterfront on both the Neue Donau side (calmer water, swimming) and the main Danube side. This is the most practical route for regular visits.

By bicycle (approximately 15-20 minutes): Vienna's Citybike/WienMobil Rad bike-sharing system has stations near the apartment. Cycle north along the Danube Canal toward Augarten, then follow the cycling path east across the Nordbrucke (North Bridge) to reach the northern section of the Donauinsel. Alternatively, cycle east on Taborstrasse and across the Reichsbrucke to reach the central island area near the U2 station. The cycling routes are well-marked and mostly separated from car traffic.

On foot (approximately 30-35 minutes): Walking to the Donauinsel is possible but longer. Head northeast through Leopoldstadt via Taborstrasse toward the Reichsbrucke (Imperial Bridge). Cross the bridge - there is a pedestrian/cycling path on both sides - and you arrive at the central Donauinsel area. This route takes you through the heart of the 2nd district, passing shops and restaurants along Taborstrasse.

Local Tips for the Donauinsel

Swimming spots: The best swimming areas on the Neue Donau side are between kilometer markers 2 and 6 (counting from the south), where the banks have been shaped into gently sloping grass and gravel beaches. The water is clean and typically reaches 22-25 degrees Celsius in July and August. There are no lifeguards, so swim at your own risk. Bring water shoes - some sections have rocky bottoms. For families with children, the shallow wading areas near the Donauinsel station are safest.

Barbecue rules: Free barbecue areas with metal fire rings are available on the island. You may only grill in these designated spots - open fires elsewhere are prohibited and fined. Bring your own charcoal, food, and drinks. Critically, you must take all trash home with you. The barbecue areas fill up quickly on summer weekends, so arrive before noon to claim a spot. The best areas are on the Neue Donau side between Donauinsel and Neue Donau stations.

Donauinselfest tips: During the festival (usually the last weekend of June), the central island area becomes extremely crowded. The U2 runs extended hours during the festival, and additional exits are opened at Donauinsel station. If you prefer a calmer experience, head to the smaller stages in the northern or southern sections of the festival grounds. Bring cash, as not all vendors accept cards. The festival is completely free - there is no admission charge for any stage.

Cycling the full island: The 21-kilometer path from end to end is flat and paved, taking about 1 to 1.5 hours by bicycle at a leisurely pace. Pack water and snacks, as facilities are concentrated around the central area and sparse at the extremities. The northern end connects to cycling paths along the Danube toward Klosterneuburg, while the southern end leads to the Lobau nature reserve. Bike rental is available at several shops near the Donauinsel U2 station.

Copa Cagrana and Sunken City: These adjacent restaurant and bar areas on the left bank of the Neue Donau (technically not on the island itself, but accessed from the same U2 station) are popular evening destinations. Copa Cagrana has a row of international restaurants with waterfront terraces. Sunken City is more of a beach bar/club scene, particularly lively on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer. Both are about 3 minutes walk from the Donauinsel U2 exit.
