Arriving in Vienna by train? Our apartments are well connected to the Hauptbahnhof via the U1 metro from Schwedenplatz. Settle into a comfortable apartment base just 20 minutes from the station.
Vienna Hauptbahnhof (Vienna Central Station) is Austria's most important railway hub and one of the major transit points in Central Europe. Opened in December 2014, the modern station replaced the former Sudbahnhof (South Station) and Ostbahnhof (East Station), consolidating Vienna's long-distance rail services into a single, state-of-the-art facility. The station handles approximately 145,000 passengers daily and serves as the terminus or through-station for international services to and from cities across Europe.
The station building, designed by Wimmer, Hoffmann, and Hotz architects, features a distinctive diamond-shaped roof structure that has become a landmark of modern Viennese architecture. The interior is spacious and well-organized, with 12 platforms, extensive shopping facilities (over 90 shops and restaurants in the BahnhofCity Wien complex), and excellent connections to local public transport including U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus services.
From Vienna Hauptbahnhof, you can board direct trains to Budapest (2.5 hours), Prague (4 hours), Munich (4 hours), Zurich (8 hours), Venice (7.5 hours), Bratislava (1 hour), and numerous other European destinations. The OBB Nightjet sleeper train network connects Vienna to cities including Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and Berlin. Within Austria, Hauptbahnhof offers frequent connections to Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, and all major Austrian cities.
The station area has developed rapidly since 2014. The Sonnwendviertel neighborhood to the south has emerged as one of Vienna's newest residential districts, featuring modern architecture, the Helmut Zilk Park, and a growing selection of shops and restaurants. The Belvedere Palace complex is just a 10-minute walk from the station, making Hauptbahnhof a convenient starting point for sightseeing as well.
Many visitors to Vienna arrive and depart by train, making connectivity to the Hauptbahnhof an important consideration when choosing accommodation. While hotels directly adjacent to the station are convenient for single-night layovers, they tend to be characterless business hotels that lack the charm and value of a neighborhood apartment. Our apartments in Leopoldstadt offer a genuinely Viennese neighborhood experience while still being straightforwardly connected to the station.
For travelers on multi-city European rail trips, our apartments provide an ideal Vienna base. Self check-in means you can arrive at any time, even late in the evening after a long train journey, and let yourself in without waiting for a reception desk. The fully equipped kitchen allows you to prepare a quick meal from supplies purchased at the Hauptbahnhof's supermarkets (there is a well-stocked BILLA and a Merkur in the station) or from our neighborhood shops.
Business travelers attending events at the Messe Wien convention center or visiting companies in Vienna's business districts will appreciate the dual advantage of our location: Hauptbahnhof connectivity for rail travel and Schottenring station for metro access to the entire city. The U2 line from Schottenring reaches the Messe Wien and Prater area directly, while the U4 connects to the western districts and Schonbrunn.
For families arriving with children and luggage, the journey from Hauptbahnhof to our apartments is simple and manageable even with heavy bags. The entire route is accessible, with elevators at all metro stations. Once you arrive at the apartment, you have space to spread out, a kitchen for children's meals, and a quiet residential street perfect for an early bedtime after a long travel day.
At Vienna Hauptbahnhof, take the U1 (red line) in the direction of Leopoldau. After three stops, exit at Schwedenplatz. Transfer to the U4 (green line) in the direction of Heiligenstadt and ride one stop to Schottenring. From the station, walk 1 minute to the apartment on Herminengasse. Total journey time: approximately 15 to 20 minutes including transfers.
Take tram line D from outside the Hauptbahnhof toward Nussdorf. This scenic route runs along the Ringstrasse, passing the Belvedere, Schwarzenbergplatz, the Stadtpark, and arriving at Schottenring after about 20 minutes. From the Schottenring tram stop, the apartment is a 2-minute walk. The tram D route is one of the most scenic tram rides in Vienna and a lovely way to arrive.
A taxi from the Hauptbahnhof to Herminengasse 12 takes about 12 to 18 minutes depending on traffic and costs approximately 15 to 22 euros. Taxis are available at the designated taxi rank outside the station's main entrance. Ride-hailing apps like Bolt and FreeNow also operate at the station.
Our Leopoldstadt neighborhood offers diverse dining to welcome you after your journey:
At the Hauptbahnhof itself, you will find a food court with dozens of options for a quick meal before or after your train, including Austrian bakeries, sushi, pizza, and a well-stocked supermarket for provisions.
