One of the world's largest art and culture complexes is just 3 U2 stops from your apartment. Leopold Museum, mumok, Kunsthalle, and more - all in one extraordinary courtyard. From €45/night.
The MuseumsQuartier (MQ) is one of the ten largest cultural complexes in the world, spanning nearly 60,000 square meters. It occupies what were once the Imperial Stables, built in 1725 by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for Emperor Charles VI. In 2001, after a decade-long renovation, the complex reopened with a brilliant fusion of Baroque architecture and bold contemporary buildings by Laurids and Manfred Ortner. The contrast between the original stone facades and the angular, white limestone museum blocks is one of the defining architectural statements of modern Vienna.
The Leopold Museum, clad in white limestone, houses the world's largest collection of works by Egon Schiele - over 40 paintings and 180 drawings. It also holds major collections of Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and the Wiener Werkstatte decorative arts movement. Schiele's raw, emotionally intense portraits and landscapes are displayed across multiple floors, making this a pilgrimage site for anyone interested in early 20th-century art.
The mumok (Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien) is Austria's largest museum of modern and contemporary art, housed in a striking dark basalt cube. Its collection of over 10,000 works spans from Classical Modernism through Pop Art, Fluxus, Nouveau Realisme, and contemporary installations. Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Jasper Johns, Yoko Ono, and Nam June Paik are all represented. The museum regularly hosts provocative temporary exhibitions that push boundaries.
Beyond the major museums, the MQ houses the Kunsthalle Wien (contemporary art exhibitions), ZOOM Kindermuseum (an interactive museum for children), Architekturzentrum Wien (architecture museum), the Tanzquartier Wien (dance performances), and dozens of smaller creative spaces, studios, and shops. The central courtyard - known as the MQ Haupthof - becomes Vienna's largest open-air living room in summer, filled with colorful "Enzis" (modular outdoor furniture) where thousands of people lounge, read, drink, and socialize on warm evenings.
The MuseumsQuartier is not just a daytime destination - it's a vibrant social hub well into the evening. The courtyard cafes and bars stay open late in summer, and the surrounding Spittelberg neighborhood (just behind the MQ) is one of Vienna's most charming areas, with narrow cobblestone lanes, independent boutiques, and excellent small restaurants. From Old Vienna Apartments, the U2 connects you to all of this in under 10 minutes.
The MQ's location also makes it a perfect launching point for other nearby attractions. The Kunsthistorisches Museum (one of the world's great art galleries, with Vermeer, Bruegel, and Caravaggio) faces the MQ across Maria-Theresien-Platz. The Naturhistorisches Museum (with its famous Venus of Willendorf) is directly opposite. You could spend three full days just in this small area and barely scratch the surface.
Staying in Leopoldstadt gives you affordable access to all of this while avoiding the premium prices charged by hotels in the 7th district around the MQ. Our apartments provide the space to spread out after a day of gallery-hopping - a living area, kitchen for dinner, and a quiet bedroom, rather than a cramped hotel room.
Walk 1 minute to Schottenring station. Take the U2 towards Karlsplatz and ride 3 stops to Museumsquartier station. Exit the station and the MQ entrance is directly above you - literally steps from the exit. Total journey: about 8 minutes door to courtyard.
Cross the Danube Canal and walk along the Ringstrasse westward, passing the Borse (Vienna Stock Exchange), the Votivkirche, the University of Vienna, and the Rathaus (City Hall). Turn south at the Volkstheater and you'll see the MQ's grand Baroque entrance archway. This walk takes you past some of the most impressive buildings on the Ring and is enjoyable at any time of day.
Halle (inside MQ, Museumsplatz 1): The MQ's signature cafe-restaurant with high ceilings, large windows, and a terrace facing the courtyard. Serves modern European cuisine for lunch and dinner, and transitions into a bar scene later in the evening. A great spot for a break between museum visits.
Glacis Beisl (Breite Gasse 4, behind MQ): A charming garden restaurant tucked against the MQ's outer wall. Serves traditional Viennese cuisine - Wiener Schnitzel, Schweinsbraten (roast pork), and seasonal specials - in a setting that feels like a hidden courtyard. The garden seating in summer is magical.
Amerlingbeisl (Stiftgasse 8, Spittelberg): Located in a quiet courtyard in the Spittelberg quarter behind the MQ, this is a beloved local Beisl with vegetarian options, Austrian classics, and a bohemian atmosphere. The hidden garden courtyard is one of Vienna's best-kept secrets.
Cafe Sperl (Gumpendorfer Strasse 11): A grand Viennese coffeehouse founded in 1880, about a 5-minute walk from the MQ. Billiard tables, newspaper racks, dark wood paneling, and an unhurried atmosphere. The Apfelstrudel is made fresh daily.
