Our apartments are just 8 minutes on foot from Schwedenplatz, the vibrant square where Vienna's old town meets the Danube Canal. Walk along the waterfront or take the U4 one stop from Schottenring.
Schwedenplatz is one of Vienna's busiest and most central squares, situated at the point where the historic Innere Stadt (1st district) meets the Danube Canal. The square serves as a major transportation hub, with connections to the U1 and U4 metro lines, multiple tram routes, and bus services. It is also the departure point for Danube river cruises operated by DDSG Blue Danube and Twin City Liner (the fast catamaran to Bratislava).
The square gets its name from Sweden (Schweden), honoring Swedish aid during the post-World War II reconstruction period. Today, Schwedenplatz is a lively meeting point surrounded by ice cream parlors (the famous Eissalon am Schwedenplatz draws enormous queues in summer), fast food outlets, bars, and the beginning of the Bermuda Triangle, Vienna's legendary nightlife district.
The Bermuda Triangle (Bermudadreieck) is a cluster of bars, pubs, and restaurants concentrated in the narrow streets between Schwedenplatz and Hoher Markt. This area, centered around Rabensteig, Seitenstettengasse, and Ruprechtsplatz, has been Vienna's go-to nightlife quarter since the 1980s. It offers everything from traditional Viennese wine taverns (Heurige) to trendy cocktail bars and live music venues. The area is also home to the Stadttempel, Vienna's main synagogue, and the medieval Ruprechtskirche (St. Rupert's Church), believed to be the oldest church in Vienna.
From Schwedenplatz, it is just a five-minute walk into the heart of Vienna's old town, reaching landmarks like Stephansdom (St. Stephen's Cathedral), the Hoher Markt with its famous Ankeruhr (Anchor Clock), and the winding medieval lanes of the Innere Stadt. The Danube Canal promenade stretching in both directions from Schwedenplatz is lined with vibrant street art, pop-up bars in summer, and offers one of the most scenic walking routes in the city.
Being just 8 minutes on foot from Schwedenplatz means you are essentially within walking distance of Vienna's entire old town, yet you benefit from the significantly lower accommodation costs and quieter residential atmosphere of the Leopoldstadt district. Hotels around Schwedenplatz and the 1st district typically charge 150 to 300 euros per night, while our fully equipped apartments start at just 45 euros per night.
The walk from our apartments to Schwedenplatz is itself a pleasure. You can stroll along the Danube Canal, enjoying the street art and waterfront atmosphere, or take the quiet residential streets through Leopoldstadt's charming neighborhood. In summer, the canal-side path is one of the liveliest spots in Vienna, with beach bars, food trucks, and outdoor seating areas creating a festival-like atmosphere almost every evening.
For nightlife enthusiasts, the proximity to Schwedenplatz and the Bermuda Triangle is ideal. You can enjoy a night out in Vienna's most famous bar district and walk home in under 10 minutes, avoiding the expense and hassle of late-night taxis. The area is well-lit and well-populated even late at night, making the walk safe and comfortable.
The combination of Schwedenplatz's transport connections (U1 reaching Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz, and Hauptbahnhof; U4 reaching Schonbrunn, Landstrasse-Wien Mitte, and beyond) with our own proximity to Schottenring (U2/U4) means that virtually every corner of Vienna is easily accessible from our apartments.
The most enjoyable way to reach Schwedenplatz is simply to walk. Head south from Herminengasse toward the Danube Canal (4 minutes), then follow the canal promenade eastward to Schwedenplatz (another 4 minutes). Alternatively, walk through the neighborhood streets via Taborstrasse, which takes about the same time. The entire walk is flat, straightforward, and safe at all hours.
For speed or in bad weather, take the U4 from Schottenring one stop in the direction of Huetteldorf to Schwedenplatz. The metro ride takes just 2 minutes, and with the 1-minute walk to Schottenring station, you are at Schwedenplatz in about 5 minutes total. Trains run every 2 to 5 minutes.
Between our apartments and Schwedenplatz, you have access to an outstanding variety of dining options:
