Stay just 15 minutes from one of Europe's leading technical universities. Our apartments at Herminengasse 12 connect you to TU Wien's Karlsplatz campus via a quick U2 and U1 metro ride.
TU Wien, founded in 1815, is Austria's largest research and educational institution in the fields of engineering and natural sciences. With its main campus centered around Karlsplatz and Resselgasse in Vienna's 4th district (Wieden), the university hosts over 28,000 students and 5,000 staff members across eight faculties. The iconic main building on Karlsplatz, designed by architect Joseph Schemerl von Leytenbach, is one of Vienna's most recognizable institutional buildings, standing alongside the Karlskirche and the Wien Museum.
TU Wien is consistently ranked among Europe's top technical universities, with particular strengths in computer science, architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and physics. The university's research output spans areas from quantum computing and artificial intelligence to sustainable construction and energy systems. International researchers, visiting professors, and exchange students regularly seek accommodation in Vienna for periods ranging from a few weeks to several months.
Beyond the main Karlsplatz campus, TU Wien also operates facilities at several other locations throughout Vienna, including the Getreidemarkt campus (just a short walk from Karlsplatz) and the Arsenal campus in the 3rd district. The Karlsplatz area itself is one of Vienna's most vibrant neighborhoods, sitting at the junction of the Ringstrasse and Wienzeile, with the Naschmarkt, the Secession building, and numerous cafes and restaurants all within easy walking distance.
Finding affordable, well-equipped accommodation close to TU Wien can be challenging, especially for short to medium-term stays. Hotels near Karlsplatz tend to be expensive, and most student dormitories require semester-long commitments. Old Vienna Apartments offers a practical alternative that bridges this gap.
Our apartments at Herminengasse 12 in the Leopoldstadt district provide fully equipped kitchens, free high-speed WiFi, and comfortable workspaces, making them ideal for students, researchers, and academics who need a home base while working at TU Wien. With stays available from 3 days up to 6 months, and prices starting at just 45 euros per night (with significant discounts for longer stays), our apartments offer far better value than hotels in the Karlsplatz area, where rooms typically start at 120 euros per night or more.
The Leopoldstadt district provides a quieter, more residential atmosphere compared to the busy tourist areas around Karlsplatz, while still being exceptionally well-connected by public transport. Our location on Herminengasse is a calm, tree-lined street just steps from the Danube Canal, Augarten park, and numerous local shops and supermarkets that you would use on a daily basis. This combination of tranquility and convenience makes it particularly suitable for longer academic stays where you need a genuine neighborhood to live in, not just a place to sleep.
The journey from our apartments to TU Wien's main campus at Karlsplatz takes approximately 15 minutes using Vienna's excellent public transport system. Here is the most convenient route:
Walk one minute from our front door to Schottenring station, which serves both the U2 and U4 lines. Take the U2 line in the direction of Karlsplatz. At Schottentor, the U2 continues to Rathaus, then Museumsquartier, and arrives at Karlsplatz after just four stops. The ride takes about 8 minutes, and trains run every 3 to 5 minutes during peak hours. From Karlsplatz station, it is a 2-minute walk to TU Wien's main entrance on Resselgasse. Total journey time: approximately 15 minutes door to door.
You can also take the U4 from Schottenring one stop to Schwedenplatz, transfer to the U1 (direction Oberlaa), and ride three stops to Karlsplatz. This route takes slightly longer (about 17 minutes) but can be useful if U2 service is disrupted.
Vienna's extensive cycling infrastructure makes biking a great option in warmer months. The route from Herminengasse to TU Wien along the Ring takes about 12 minutes. WienMobil Rad bike-sharing stations are located near Schottenring and at Karlsplatz, making one-way cycling trips convenient.
Our Leopoldstadt neighborhood has an excellent and diverse food scene. For your daily meals, you will find plenty of options within a short walk from the apartment:
Near TU Wien at Karlsplatz, you will also find the famous Naschmarkt (Vienna's largest open-air market) with dozens of food stalls, restaurants, and cafes offering cuisines from around the world. The market is open Monday to Saturday and is a perfect lunch destination between classes or meetings.
