No need to stay at an overpriced airport hotel. Our city center apartments connect to Vienna Airport (VIE) in about 35 minutes via the City Airport Train (CAT) or S-Bahn from Wien Mitte station, which is just two U4 stops from Schottenring.
Vienna International Airport (IATA: VIE), located in Schwechat approximately 18 kilometers southeast of the city center, is Austria's largest airport and a major Central European hub. The airport handles around 30 million passengers annually and serves as the home base for Austrian Airlines, a member of the Star Alliance. Direct flights connect Vienna to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and North America.
The airport has been extensively modernized in recent years. Terminal 3, the main terminal building, features a spacious departure hall, efficient security processing, and a wide selection of shops, restaurants, and lounges. The airport is consistently rated among Europe's most efficient for its relatively quick check-in and security procedures compared to larger hubs like London Heathrow or Paris Charles de Gaulle.
Transport connections between the airport and the city center are excellent and varied. The City Airport Train (CAT) provides a non-stop express service to Wien Mitte station in just 16 minutes. The S-Bahn (suburban train line S7) offers a cheaper alternative, reaching Wien Mitte in about 25 minutes with several intermediate stops. The Vienna Airport Lines bus service connects the airport to several points in the city, including Schwedenplatz and Westbahnhof. Taxis and ride-hailing services are also readily available, with the journey to the city center taking 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Some travelers, especially those with early morning flights or late evening arrivals, consider booking airport hotels. However, for any stay longer than a single overnight, this is a poor use of your Vienna time and budget. Airport hotels in Schwechat are isolated from the city, offer no neighborhood character, and charge 90 to 150 euros per night for a generic room with no kitchen or living space. You would need to taxi into the city for any sightseeing, dining, or cultural experiences.
Old Vienna Apartments offers a far better proposition. At just 35 minutes from the airport via public transport, you are staying in the heart of Vienna with immediate access to the city's attractions, restaurants, parks, and public transport network. Our self check-in system means you can arrive at any hour, whether your flight lands at noon or midnight. Simply pick up the keys from the secure lockbox and settle into your fully equipped apartment.
For business travelers making repeated trips to Vienna, our apartments provide a home-like base that hotel rooms cannot match. Store your work materials, keep a few personal items in the apartment between visits (for longer bookings), use the kitchen to maintain your routine, and enjoy reliable WiFi for early morning video calls before heading to meetings. Our rates from 45 euros per night, with meaningful discounts for weekly and monthly bookings, deliver substantial savings over hotel stays.
Families arriving on long-haul flights particularly benefit from an apartment. Children can eat familiar foods prepared in the kitchen, there is space to play and decompress after a long journey, and the quiet residential street ensures a good night's sleep despite jet lag. The nearby Augarten park (6 minutes walk) has playgrounds and open spaces perfect for burning off energy after hours on a plane.
Take the U4 from Schottenring two stops in the direction of Huetteldorf to Wien Mitte/Landstrasse station. Follow signs to the CAT terminal (clearly marked within the station). The CAT runs every 30 minutes and reaches the airport in exactly 16 minutes. The CAT offers online check-in for select airlines at the Wien Mitte terminal. Total journey time from apartment to airport: approximately 35 minutes. A one-way CAT ticket costs 12 euros (as of 2025), with a return ticket for 21 euros. You can also purchase tickets online at cityairporttrain.com for a slight discount.
From Wien Mitte (same U4 journey as above), take the S7 suburban train toward Wolfsthal/Flughafen Wien. The S7 costs only a standard Wiener Linien extension ticket on top of your regular travel pass (or about 4.40 euros for the full journey from the city) and takes approximately 25 minutes to the airport. Trains run every 30 minutes. This is the best value option and the difference in journey time is modest. Total journey time from apartment: approximately 40 minutes.
The airport bus departs from Schwedenplatz (8 minutes walk from the apartment or one U4 stop) and runs directly to the airport in about 20 minutes. Departures are every 30 minutes during the day. A one-way ticket costs about 8 euros. This is a convenient option if you are carrying heavy luggage, as the bus stop at Schwedenplatz is at street level with no stairs.
A taxi from Herminengasse 12 to the airport costs approximately 36 euros (fixed rate for city-to-airport trips). The journey takes 20 to 35 minutes depending on traffic. For early morning flights, pre-booking a taxi or using the Bolt/FreeNow app is recommended. Some guests also book airport transfer services, which can be arranged in advance for a similar price.
After a long flight, you will want good food nearby. Our Leopoldstadt neighborhood delivers:
