Welcome to the 2nd district - Vienna's most dynamic, diverse, and livable neighborhood, and the home of Old Vienna Apartments on Herminengasse 12.
Leopoldstadt is Vienna's 2nd district (Bezirk), an island-shaped territory bounded by the Danube Canal to the west and south, and the Danube River and Prater parkland to the east. This geography gives the district a distinctly defined character - crossing a bridge into Leopoldstadt feels like entering a different world from the imperial grandeur of the 1st district, even though the two are separated by just a few hundred meters of water. Named after Emperor Leopold I, who in the 17th century confined Vienna's Jewish population to this area (it was later known as "Mazzesinsel" or "Matzo Island"), Leopoldstadt has a complex, layered history that shapes its unique cultural identity today.
The district covers approximately 19 square kilometers and is home to around 105,000 residents, making it one of Vienna's most densely populated areas. But the density is offset by extraordinary green space: the Prater alone contributes 6 square kilometers of parkland, and the Augarten adds another significant green area. This combination of urban density and accessible nature is part of what makes Leopoldstadt so livable. Residents enjoy the convenience of a central, well-connected city district with the relaxation of vast parks just minutes from their doors.
In recent years, Leopoldstadt has undergone a remarkable transformation. Once considered a working-class district with affordable rents, it has become one of Vienna's most sought-after neighborhoods for young professionals, creatives, and families. The Karmeliterviertel (Carmelite Quarter) around Karmelitermarkt has emerged as a culinary and cultural hotspot, Praterstrasse has reinvented itself as a boulevard of design shops and specialty coffee houses, and the Danube Canal waterfront has evolved into Vienna's premier outdoor social space. Yet Leopoldstadt retains its multicultural character and relatively affordable prices, making it a genuine alternative to the tourist-saturated 1st district.
The Karmeliterviertel: The area around Karmelitermarkt and Karmeliterplatz is the social heart of the district. Centered on one of Vienna's oldest markets (operating since 1671), this neighborhood has become a food destination with artisan stalls, organic produce, and some of the city's best casual restaurants. The surrounding streets - Grosse Pfarrgasse, Leopoldsgasse, and Haidgasse - are lined with independent boutiques, vintage shops, natural wine bars, and specialty coffee roasters. Saturday mornings at the Karmelitermarkt are a neighborhood institution, when locals gather for brunch, shopping, and socializing.
The Praterstrasse corridor: Running from Schwedenplatz to Praterstern, Praterstrasse is Leopoldstadt's main commercial thoroughfare. This grand boulevard, built in the 18th century as a carriage road to the Prater, is lined with handsome Grunderzeit buildings housing a mix of international restaurants, design studios, and cultural spaces. The Johann Strauss apartment (now a small museum) is at Praterstrasse 54, where the waltz king composed "The Blue Danube." The Nestroy-Hof shopping area and the Tabor cinema add to the street's cultural offerings.
The Augarten area: The northern part of Leopoldstadt, around the Augarten park, has a quieter, more residential feel. The Augarten itself is Vienna's oldest Baroque park (1650s), home to the Vienna Boys' Choir concert hall (MuTh), the Augarten Contemporary art gallery in one of the district's two wartime flak towers, and the famous Augarten Porcelain Manufactory. The streets around the park - Castellezgasse, Obere Augartenstrasse - have traditional Viennese Beisl restaurants, neighborhood bakeries, and a pace of life that feels almost village-like within the city.
The Stuwerviertel: East of Praterstern, the Stuwerviertel was historically one of Vienna's grittier areas, but it is rapidly gentrifying. New apartment buildings, creative spaces, and restaurants are transforming the neighborhood while retaining some of its edgier character. The WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) campus, designed by star architects including Zaha Hadid, anchors the area with striking contemporary architecture. The Stuwerviertel offers the most affordable dining options in Leopoldstadt, with numerous international restaurants along Heinestrasse.
The Prater and Riesenrad: The Prater is Leopoldstadt's crown jewel - a vast green area that includes the Wurstelprater amusement park (home to the iconic 65-meter Riesenrad Ferris wheel, built in 1897), the 4.4-kilometer Hauptallee (a perfectly straight tree-lined avenue popular with joggers and cyclists), sports facilities, the Ernst Happel Stadium (Austria's largest), and extensive woodlands. The Prater is open 24/7 and free to enter; you only pay for rides at the Wurstelprater. The Riesenrad costs approximately €13.50 for adults and offers panoramic views over the city.
The Augarten: Just 6 minutes walk from Old Vienna Apartments, this formal Baroque park features geometric pathways, a rose garden, open lawns, and the striking contrast of two massive wartime flak towers (concrete anti-aircraft structures from 1944 that are too costly to demolish). One tower houses the Augarten Contemporary gallery, featuring rotating exhibitions. The Vienna Boys' Choir performs regularly at the MuTh concert hall on the park's grounds. The Augarten Porcelain Manufactory, established by Empress Maria Theresa in 1718, offers factory tours and has a shop selling its distinctive hand-painted porcelain.
The Danube Canal: The Danube Canal forms Leopoldstadt's western and southern boundary and has become Vienna's most vibrant waterfront. From spring through autumn, the canal banks come alive with beach bars (Strandbar Herrmann, Badeschiff, Adria Wien), pop-up restaurants, street art (the canal walls feature ever-changing murals by international artists), and cultural events. The canal path is also a popular running and cycling route, connecting Nussdorf in the north to the Prater in the south. From Old Vienna Apartments, the canal is just a 4-minute walk.
Supermarkets: Leopoldstadt is well served by grocery stores. The nearest Billa is on Taborstrasse (5 minutes walk from the apartment), with a larger Billa Plus on Praterstrasse. A Hofer (Aldi equivalent, budget-friendly) is on Taborstrasse, and a Spar is on Hollandstrasse. For organic and specialty groceries, the Karmelitermarkt or the Bio-Laden shops along Grosse Pfarrgasse are excellent options. Most supermarkets are open Monday-Saturday from 7:15 AM to 7:30 PM and closed on Sundays.
Transport connections: Leopoldstadt is exceptionally well connected. Schottenring station (U2 and U4 lines) is 1 minute from the apartment. The U2 connects to the Rathaus, Museumsquartier, Karlsplatz, and onward to Seestadt via the Prater and Donauinsel. The U4 runs along the Ring to Schwedenplatz, Stadtpark, Karlsplatz, and continues to Schoenbrunn Palace and Hutteldorf. Tram lines 1, 2, and 31 serve the district, and numerous bus routes complement the network. Night buses run after 12:30 AM when the metro stops.
Safety: Leopoldstadt is generally very safe, as is Vienna overall (consistently ranked among the world's safest cities). The Praterstern area can attract some urban characters in the evening, but the residential streets around Herminengasse, the Karmeliterviertel, and the Augarten area are peaceful at all hours. Standard city precautions apply - keep valuables secure in crowded areas and on public transport.
Dining highlights: Leopoldstadt's restaurant scene is remarkably diverse. Cafe Ansari (Praterstrasse) does exceptional brunch. Skopik & Lohn (Leopoldsgasse) is a Viennese institution with a ceiling drawing by artist Otto Zitko. Mochi (Praterstrasse) serves outstanding Japanese-Austrian fusion. For traditional Viennese food, Gasthaus zum Schwarzen Kameel has an outpost in the 2nd district, and the Beisl restaurants around the Augarten serve classic dishes at local prices. For budget meals, the Turkish, Middle Eastern, and Asian restaurants along Taborstrasse offer filling meals for under €10.
